Warning!! Outbreak of Sanity

The following article recently appeared on Daily Kos announcing that saner, more knowledgeable leaders in the GOP are now calling for the end of GOP science denial.

HOLY REALITY CHECK!!! Former Republican Heads of EPA on climate change: Don't deny, Don't delay

Hell is indeed freezing over and angels are dancing and popping corks everywhere. In an August 1st op-ed in the New York Times, former administrators of the Environmental Protection Agency William D. Ruckelshaus (1970 to 1973, 1983 to 1985), Lee M. Thomas (1985 to 1989), William K. Reilly (1989 to 1993), and Christine Todd Whitman (2001 to 2003) make the Republican Case for Climate Action.

When Branding Breaks Bad

August 11, 2013. Like much of Albuquerque, we're already missing Breaking Bad, the most high profile movie or TV series filmed in the area so far. It seems quaint that, when BrBa was filming its first season here, city leaders worried that a story about meth, cancer and really bad behavior might "brand" Albuquerque badly.
But New Mexico has never looked more beautiful than in BrBa's extraordinary cinematography. People all over the world now recognize local landmarks and scenery, not just the spectacular post-card stuff, but the mundane.
As branding, BrBa worked infinitely better than the recent, rather silly effort to make people to call Albuquerque "The Q."
But The Q has nothing on some ill-considered car names. Decades ago, the world got a laugh when Chevrolet introduced the "Nova" to its Spanish-speaking market. Nobody wanted a car named "It doesn't go."
I'm not sure we've learned anything. I recently walked past a Rubicon in a parking lot--a big muscle car plastered with gun-nut stickers. Maybe the owner fancies himself going out in a blaze of glory in his car named after a historical point of no return.
The Armada is even more mystifying. Who wants a vehicle named after an invasion fleet that sank before it reached its destination? And can you see a Passat without thinking piss-ant?
But some brands you gotta love. Driving through West Texas once, I passed a building supply store labeled The Lumbering Giant of the Permian Basin

New Review of Killer Miracle:

“. . . a murder mystery with more twists and turns than a mountain road. By turns funny, sexy, knowing, and tense, Killer Miracle’s skillfully executed story will satisfy hardcore mystery addicts, while anyone looking for a quick hit of northern New Mexico small-town life will savor the literary equivalent of a chile fix.

Late one night in the church [that murder victim] Emilio helps maintain, we find him attending the spectral image of an angel on the wall. Has he discovered a divine revelation in the storeroom, or did he paint it himself, blending pigments with natural water stains? There’s no time to speculate—as Emilio steps outside, locks the door, and heads back across the empty plaza, an unidentified assailant strikes him down. Just like that, two pages into the tale, Sanchez snares the reader with two nested mysteries. There are more to come.”--Charles Poling, New Mexico Magazine
